What Split PDF does

Split PDF turns one multi-page document into several smaller PDFs. The default method creates one output for every page. The custom method accepts page groups such as 1-3, 4-6, 7 and creates one PDF for each comma-separated group. All outputs are placed in a ZIP archive because browsers handle a single download more predictably than many simultaneous downloads.

A split copies the chosen pages into new files; it does not merely create viewing shortcuts into the original. Each output can therefore be shared independently. The ZIP contains names such as part-01.pdf and part-02.pdf in the same order as the requested groups.

For a 20-page workbook that must be reviewed page by page, choose One PDF per page. The ZIP will contain 20 numbered files. Rename the extracted files after checking their content, because automatic part numbers describe sequence but not subject.

Tips for better results

  • Confirm the source page count with Page Counter before entering long ranges.
  • Include every required page; custom groups do not automatically include omitted pages.
  • Use ascending ranges unless a deliberate change of order is required.
  • Extract the ZIP before attaching individual outputs to messages or forms.
  • Keep the source PDF until every split file has been verified.

Planning and quality checks

Before splitting a scanned batch, make a page map that records where each logical document begins and ends. Thumbnail views are useful, but inspect pages near every boundary at readable size because a blank reverse side or a continuation page can be easy to misclassify. Add the page totals of all planned groups and compare them with the source count when every source page is supposed to be represented.

After downloading, extract the complete ZIP into an empty folder. Open each part in numbered order and check its first page, last page, orientation, and expected count. Rename parts only after this review so descriptive names do not become attached to the wrong content. If outputs will be distributed separately, confirm that each has enough context to identify its subject without relying on the original combined file.

Limitations and important details

Custom groups use inclusive page numbers and cannot express open-ended syntax such as 5-. A range must start and end within the document, and its first number cannot be greater than its last. The same page can appear in different groups if entered more than once, but each group itself is normalized to unique pages.

Splitting can remove document-level behavior that depended on the complete original, including some bookmarks, cross-document links, signatures, forms, and embedded attachments. It does not rename outputs from page text or detect where one scanned record ends. That judgment remains with the user.
