What Crop PDF does

Crop PDF changes the visible crop box of selected pages. You enter how many millimetres to trim from the top, right, bottom, and left. The page content is not rasterized or scaled; a PDF reader is instructed to display a smaller rectangular region of the existing page.

Because cropping changes a viewing boundary, content outside that boundary may still remain in the PDF data. This is useful for tidying scanner borders or excessive whitespace, but it is not secure deletion and must never be treated as redaction.

When to use this tool

Use cropping when pages have consistent blank margins, scanner shadows along an edge, registration marks outside the desired area, or a large canvas around a small diagram. Exact numeric margins work best when the unwanted region is similar across all chosen pages.

Use Delete Pages when a whole page is unnecessary, and use proper redaction software when hidden content must be irreversibly removed. Cropping is primarily a presentation and framing operation.

How to crop PDF pages

1. Measure or estimate the unwanted margins and select the source PDF.
2. Choose the target pages, or leave the field blank for all pages.
3. Enter non-negative top, right, bottom, and left values in millimetres.
4. Choose Crop PDF; reduce values if the tool reports too little remaining area.
5. Download and inspect every page size and edge, especially pages with different layouts.

Practical examples

A scanned booklet has a 6 mm dark strip on the left and 3 mm excess along the other edges. Enter left 6 and top, right, and bottom 3. Apply the crop to a representative page first if layouts vary, because a margin suitable for odd pages may remove text from even pages.

A slide deck was exported onto oversized pages with 20 mm of empty space around each slide. Equal 20 mm margins can produce a tighter viewing frame. This may improve screen presentation, but printing software can still use other PDF boxes or scaling preferences, so test the actual print workflow.

Tips for better results

• Begin with small values and increase them after reviewing an output.
• Separate portrait and landscape page groups when their margins differ.
• Check headers, footers, annotations, and page numbers near every edge.
• Keep the original because hidden cropped content may be needed later.
• Use a PDF inspector when print-production boxes such as TrimBox matter.

Planning and quality checks

Test crop values on the smallest or most crowded page in the selected range. A value that removes harmless whitespace from a large cover can cut into a narrow appendix. Compare the output at each edge, and use a reader that can show page dimensions when consistent sizing matters. If the source alternates left and right binding margins, one four-sided setting may not suit both page types.

For print work, inspect the output through the actual print or preflight process rather than assuming the on-screen crop is authoritative. Some software considers MediaBox, TrimBox, BleedBox, or printer scaling in addition to CropBox. For confidentiality, attempt to select or search for material outside the visible area; its continued presence demonstrates why cropping cannot replace certified redaction and sanitization.

Record the four applied margins when other people may need to reproduce the result. A filename alone rarely explains how much was removed from each edge or which source page box was used. Check the final page at normal zoom as well as at its fitted-window size.

Limitations and important details

The tool applies numeric margins and does not display an interactive page preview or detect whitespace automatically. All selected pages receive the same four margins, even if their dimensions differ. It refuses settings that would leave less than a small usable page area.

Changing CropBox does not securely remove underlying objects, metadata, annotations, or text beyond the visible boundary. Some viewers and printers may use MediaBox or other page boxes differently. For legal redaction, prepress, or archival normalization, use software designed and validated for that purpose.
